A Regional Health Resource

Sudbury is recognized as the regional health care center for northern Ontario.  Everyday, there are people throughout the north who must come to Sudbury by air ambulance, car, bus, plane or train to receive the care they need at our hospitals.

As well, our state of the art Cancer Treatment Center, and Cardiac / Thoracic Center are recognized across North America as providing highly professional services.  Now people need only travel to Sudbury rather than Toronto to obtain the level of care that they require.

In 1987, the Sudbury Kinsmen Club formed a community based foundation to assist in providing low cost accommodation to family members of medical patients who travel to our community for treatment.  The foundation is now offering our program as a direct service to those families who require assistance.

The facility consists of a two story motel with thirty rooms, a restaurant and a cozy lounge.  The House of Kin is centrally located to all the hospitals.  It is also in close proximity to drug stores, shopping malls, grocery stores and many other amenities that will assist our guests in experiencing a suitable home away from home.  This results in a far more comfortable and less stressful level of support.

The Need for Our Facility

Medical science now recognizes that a patient improves much faster when supported on a daily basis by family and relatives.  However, many families find it difficult to provide this support because of the stress of the situation and the additional financial burden of living expenses that they will experience.

Now a family member can be accommodated in our facility at a more reasonable rate and can concentrate most of their energies on giving support to those who need it the most.

The Benefits of our Program

The primary beneficiaries of the House of Kin program will be the out of town patients and their family members.

As well, many patients from out of town presently booked into the hospital will be able to stay as out-patients in our center.  Thus, our facility will help free up our beds in the hospitals for those patients that urgently need them.  Additionally, patients will be able to live in with their families and receive their full-time assistance and attention wile undergoing diagnosis or treatment.

As an added benefit, our facility will bring together many families undergoing similar hardships.  This will foster an environment of support for everyone involved and provide many opportunities for friendship that can only increase the general well being of patients and family alike.

Who can Participate

Any person can qualify to use our program if they:

•   live outside of the Region of Sudbury,

•   have traveled to receive surgery, medical assessment, treatment, post operative checkup, or

•   are family members of patients currently in one of our hospitals.

Simply complete our program application / authorization form and have it signed by either the hospital or your physician.  Present the form when registering at our facility and the special rate will be provided to you.

This program has been implemented to service those people who require financial assistance in a time of need and is not intended for those who can afford the normal charges at other establishments.
